The Studio
Before and After!
Take note- these are just cell phone pictures! I’m a busy mama and the only way I was going to finally post photos of the studio!:)
The studio is turning FOUR!! It seems like forever ago that we made the scary decision to turn our detached garage into a studio. After 11 years of hauling props and light around to jobs, I started searching for commercial space. Then it dawned on me one day while playing with the kids outside- the GARAGE! We really only used for trash bins and bikes, so why not! My husband was immediately on board and we hired a contractor and within about a month, I had a studio.
The transformation was amazing. I’ll never forget the feelings I had as I watched it come together- scared, excited, nervous-this had always been a dream of mine. The garage was pretty icky, just bare bones down to the studs. We added 3 huge windows in addition to two existing windows and replaced the garage door with french doors, light faux wood floors and a vaulted ceiling (which I insisted on). Once it was finished it was just one big empty canvas.
It took me awhile to get comfy in my space. I eventually added a wood floor backdrop that can be flipped between white and stained wood. An area for family photos that includes 3 backdrop colors and a white couch/futon that easily slides out of the way. Then there is the beanbag area for posing newborns. And lots of storage for my prop obsession. I also have several suspension hooks ready to hold curtains and anything else I come up with. For the first year or two I used natural light, but soon realized it was just too inconsistent and now use strobe lights.
My little studio is located in Broad Ripple. Yes, we have three kids in a little Broad Ripple house, and yes, I laugh inside when people tell me they are outgrowing their home. We technically have two bedrooms, but we are crafty with space and not afraid to knock a wall down. Every inch of our home has its purpose. We don’t have junk and my favorite thing to do is a giant purge. We are walking distance to everything we need-grocery, school, work, parks. We love our house and we love the studio, so we have made our little home grow with us. I just hope I feel this way when the kids are taller me!
Thanks for checking out my space! And thank you to all of my loyal clients, you helped make my little dream come true:)
Love,
Jan
